TRANSFER CREDIT GUIDELINES

Students with an undergraduate degree from an accredited U.S. institution:

Students who hold at least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. college or university are not required to complete first-year writing courses (ENG 100 or ENG 101) at NCSU. Instead, these students should submit proof of their degree to Roy Stamper, Assoc. Director of the First-Year Writing Program (roy_stamper@ncsu.edu; 513-1807). Although no hours of credit will be awarded for these students, the ENG 101 requirement will be waived upon verification of documentation. Any ENG 1** coursework transferred to NCSU will count as free elective or additional credits.

Students with 6.0 hours of college composition transfer credit:

Transfer students who complete an approved 6-hour first-year composition requirement (two English 1** transfer courses) at their prior institution will receive four hours of credit for ENG 101 and two hours of free elective or additional credit.

Students with 4.0 hours of college composition transfer credit:

Transfer students who complete an approved 4-hour college composition course at their previous institution will receive transfer credit for ENG 101.  Contact Roy Stamper, Associate Director of the First-Year Writing Program, at 513-1807 or at roy_stamper@ncsu.edu to see if a particular course has been evaluated for ENG 101 equivalency.

Students with 3.0 hours of college composition transfer credit:

Transfer students who have completed a 3-hour college-level composition course at their previous institution will receive free elective credit for their prior course and will be required to take English 101 when they enroll at NCSU.

NOTE:  This policy applies only if the prior course was the first course in a two-semester requirement.  If the student placed out of a first course and completed a second course in a two-semester requirement, thus fulfilling that school’s requirement, he or she should consult with Roy Stamper, Assoc. Director of the First-Year Writing Program, at 513-1807 or at roy_stamper@ncsu.edu.  Upon proper documentation, the ENG 101 requirement will be satisfied.  The fourth credit hour can be made up through free elective or additional hours.

NOTE:  Students who place into ENG 100 but who have completed a 3-hour college composition course at another institution prior to enrolling at NCSU are eligible to enroll directly in ENG 101.

Students with 0 hours of college composition transfer credit:

Transfer students who placed out of the first-year writing requirement at their previous institution, earning no transferable credits, will be placed in composition at NCSU based on test scores submitted to NCSU.  See our Placement Guidelines for more information.  Transfer students with appropriate scores, as indicated in the placement chart, may submit a portfolio for possible waiver of ENG 101.

Students who have no composition transfer credit but who would like to satisfy their first-year writing requirement at another institution should consult NCSU’s Dept. of Admissions Transfer Course Equivalency database to ensure transferability of coursework.  See http://admissions.ncsu.edu/find-stuff/transfer-student/course-equiv.php.  Note that in most cases students will need to complete two 3-hour college composition courses (transferable to NCSU as 6.0 ENG 1** credits) in order to satisfy the ENG 101 requirement.

*Students whose situations are not covered above should consult with Roy Stamper, Assoc. Director of the First-Year Writing Program, at 513-1807 or at roy_stamper@ncsu.edu during their first semester of coursework at NCSU.
