  • BON BECERRA, 2301 Roxboro Road, Durham (220-0525). Open daily. Broad selection of Mexican and Latin American goods, including fresh meats and produce.
  • COMPARE FOODS, 2215 New Hope Church Road, in Brentwood Square, Raleigh. 850-2400. Open daily. One of the largest Latino markets in the area, a true supermarket selling just about every Mexican or Latin American foodstuff or household goods you could think of. In-house butcher (whose wares include lamb and goat), and a very good seafood selection.
  • DON JOSE, 407 W. Rosemary St., Chapel Hill (969-8568). Open daily. Well-stocked Mexican grocery sells meats, fresh produce, freshly baked sweet Mexican breads, household goods and clothing.
  • DON JOSE'S, 805 E. Williams St., Apex. 363-2011. Open daily. Small Mexican grocery store with limited fresh produce selection. Not affiliated with Don Jose in Chapel Hill.
  • EL MANDADO, 2 locations: 4020 Capital Boulevard, Raleigh (878-1800) and 4000-168 Atlantic Ave., in Brentwood Square Shopping Center, Raleigh (872-8516). Specializing in products of El Salvador, with good selection of other Central American and Mexican goods. Groceries, fresh produce, and an attached restaurant. The Capital Boulevard location is the larger of the two.

Broad selection of items from across Central and South America, including Venezuela, Argentina, Colombia, Brazil, Peru, Guatemala, El Salvador and Puerto Rico. Grocery items, fresh tropical produce, prepackaged meats, salt-cured fish and chorizo.

  • LA MEXICANA, 3922 Atlantic Ave., in Brentwood Square, Raleigh. 876-4099. Closed Sunday. Medium-sized Mexican grocery with typical selection.
  • LA MICHOACANA PANADERIA, 118 SW Maynard Road, Cary. 469-0456. Open daily. Bakery sells freshly baked breads and tortillas, pastries and a small assortment of Latino grocery goods.
  • LA NUEVA MEXICANA, 111 E. Chatham St., in Chatham Plaza, Cary. 461-0955. Open daily. Small store sells Mexican groceries and refrigerated goods, including queso fresco.
  • LA RAZA, 226 E. Main St., Clayton. 202-0665. Open daily. Selling mostly Mexican canned goods, with a limited offering of fresh produce.

  • LATIN AMERICAN FOODS, 2502 Holloway St., Durham. 596-7903. Open daily. Specializing in Honduran products, plus a selection of items from across Latin America. Meats and cheeses in refrigerated case, and house-baked sweets.
  • MI PAISANO TIENDA Y CARNECERIA, 748-D E. Chatham St., Cary. 468-8222. Open daily. Mexican grocery sells fresh meats and produce, as well as canned goods and spices.
