First apologies....web pages come and go without warning. I maintain hundreds of pages with thousands of links, so some of these are probably dead. I run an e-bot to check links when I have time. When you're part of the cyperspace community, do a better job that your predecessors!!

Computer Software and Skills Needed for DE
What software and computing skills do you need to take this course?
- NCSU Unity Account
- Web Browser. I recommend either the latest versions of Netscape
or Internet Explorer
- Word processing or text editing program with a spell checker and grammar checker to write your assignments. Set the grammar checking option to "format writing." If you're not using Microsoft Word, you may need to save your work as RTF (Rich Text Files).
- You will need to learn how to use WebCT software for class discussions,
but the actual program resides at NC State. No purchase is necessary.
- You must have virus-checking software on your computer.
Practice safe computing, but do not be duped by virus hoaxes. To
check whether a virus scare is real or not, go to the following

- Most public and university libraries and
bookstores have a computer section, including books on using the World
Wide Web. You can also find online information and tutorials. Two skills
are especially important. {1} Learning to do effective searches with search
engines. Click on SEARCH at the top of your web browser screen. You will
find many different software programs, such as Yahoo, AltaVista, Hotbot,
Infoseek and others, that help you locate relevant Internet sites. {2}
Once you locate useful sites, learn to use the FIND command (under the
Edit menu at the top of the page). This allows you to find keywords within
the document you are browsing. As with other areas of life, you learn by
doing. Practice, practice, practice.
