• 1. ATTENDANCE: Mandatory. You are allowed 3 absences, excused or unexcused. These include sick days.  If at all possible, inform the instructor before any absence. If you miss a class period you earn a "0" for the day. No exceptions.  Each absence after three will result in a 1% deduction from the final grade. For example, if you have an 84 average, but you have missed a total of 6 classes, then your average will drop to an 81.  In other words, you go from a B to a B-.  You are responsible for all class material starting Wed., August 20th, 2008 regardless of when you register for the course!!  Beginning with the  semester start date, by the end of the second class period, or fifth business day of the semester (whichever comes first) students who have not attended class or contacted the instructor regarding his/her absence may be dropped from the class roll.
• 2. DAILY ASSIGNMENTS/PARTICIPATION: Daily participation is expected, evaluated and recorded.   You are expected to actively read each page of the text and workbook as indicated on the course schedule below prior to attending class each day, and prepare each activity as needed (orally, written out, etc.) in order to complete the activity in class. If you encounter an activity that proves problematic, ask about it at the beginning of the class. Class time will include opportunities for individual, pair, small and large group work based on the material prepared before class.
• 3.  PRESENTATIONS:       Oral Assessments:  You must complete 2 oral assessments by the following dates:  1st Oral Assessment Alphabet letters A-L (Oct. 1st) Alphabet letters M-Z (Oct. 8th).  2nd Oral Assessment Alphabet letters A-L (Nov. 17th)  Alphabet Letters M-Z (Nov. 10th.)
• 4.  TESTING: Quizzes (pop or otherwise) will cover material from previous class periods.  Hourly exams will concentrate on the current chapters but of necessity include material from all previous chapters. The dates for these exams are listed on the course schedule below.  Make-up exams will only be allowed with ample previous notice to instructor.  The oral section of the final exam will be administered during the final class session in the regular classroom, no make-up allowed;  the written section of the final will be administered as indicated on the course schedule below (and in the TRACS book for all multi-section foreign language courses).
• 5. MAKE-UP WORK: Typically, there is no make-up work. Emergencies and school-sponsored trips, etc., are handled on an individual basis.
• 6. WRITTEN EXERCISES: Written workbook exercises in the workbook/lab manual and internet research are to be completed as indicated on the course schedule.  Come to class with the work prepared for the day indicated on the syllabus.  All homework that is turned in must be typed, double-spaced with proper Spanish punctuation in MS WORD Doc. form.  Please click on the link CORRECTIONS KEY, for a list of codes that will be used to evaluate all of your written homework assignments when they are returned to you.

  • 7. LISTENING COMPREHENSION EXERCISES: REQUIRED computerized listening comprehension exercises (QUIA) are to be completed along with each chapter, with the final due date for completion being the day prior to the chapter exam.  You must spend a minimum of one hour for each chapter.  You should register for QUIA before the first day of class.  Please register with your LAST NAME, FIRST NAME.  Lab material will be used in class quizzes and will be tested on exams.  QUIA CODE: XEEG487

• 8. GENERAL: We will practice and develop all five language skills: speaking, listening, writing, reading and culture. Due to the nature of the course, you will be expected to complete a significant amount of work on your own and with other class members, outside of the classroom.
• 9. HONOR CODE:  You and the instructor will follow both the spirit and letter of the NCSU Honor Code. You will have the opportunity to attest to this in writing upon several occasions. Although you must complete and turn in your own work, you are encouraged to work with others in completing and preparing the above assignments outside of class, as well as some activities during class time (quizzes and tests being the principal exceptions). However, the copying or sharing of answers in or out of the classroom, from another student or from an answer key, etc., is in violation of the honor code.  The use of on-line translators or tutors to prepare your written work is not allowed.  Any work turned in with inappropriate assistance will automatically receive a zero.  No exceptions.
