Daily assignments are listed by calendar day and include pages in the Plazas textbook, the Hojas suplementarias, and an accompanying video of a previously taped FLS201 Business Spanish class. You should do the Plazas pages and assignment first, then read and complete the assignment on the Hojas suplementarias. Following most exercises on the Hojas suplementarias you will find a link to an additional interactive version of the exercise that will allow you to check for comprehension and get immediate feedback on your progress. Finally, watch the accompanying video listed on the syllabus. These videos were filmed during an actual semester. It is not necessary that you watch each entire video, but rather use the fast forward mechanism to scan for the grammar explanations and homework review as needed. The assignments are due as indicated on the course schedule. Due to the large volume of work, it is essential that you keep up and stay on target with your work. Because this is a summer school syllabus, the amount of material covered per day is the equivalent of two and a half class periods in a regular semester. It is expected that all assignments are completed per the university honor code. You are expected to actively read each page of the text as indicated on the syllabus, and to prepare each activity as needed (orally, written out, etc.). Daily participation is expected, and will be checked through periodic quizzes and homework submissions submitted through Vista or email. All homework that is turned in must be typed, double-spaced with proper Spanish punctuation in MS WORD Doc. form. Please click on the link CORRECTIONS KEY, for a list of codes that will be used to evaluate all of your written homework assignments when they are returned to you. Please click on link for KEYBOARD MODIFICATION. If you encounter an activity that proves problematic, email me PRIOR to the deadline, not after.
Quizzes will cover material assigned for the previous day or days. They are timed and simple. They are intended principally to encourage you to have all the activities prepared prior to moving on. If you miss a quiz you earn a "0" for that quiz. The Oral Assessments (see link above in Grading Rubric) will be taken via Elluminate. The schedule for quizzes will be given at the start of the semester. Chapter exams are hourly tests and will concentrate on the current chapters but of necessity include material from all previous chapters. They will be administered through Vista and are timed. You have one hour to complete the tests and if you go over the time, you will not be able to submit your test and will not receive credit for that test. YOU MUST NOT USE ANY OUTSIDE SOURCES WHILE TAKING THE CHAPTER EXAMS. NO TEXTBOOK MAY BE USED, NOR ANY INTERNET ASSISTANCE. WHEN YOU SUBMIT AN EXAM, IT INCLUDES YOUR SIGNATURE TO THE PLEDGE THAT YOU HAVE NEITHER GIVEN NOR RECEIVED UNAUTHORIZED AID ON THE TEST.
The Final Exam will be the comprehensive FLS201 departmental final exam, administered on the date/time indicated on the course schedule. The common exam times can be found in the Registration and Records Calendar site. For university policies and procedures regarding final exams see: http://www.ncsu.edu/policies/academic_affairs/courses_undergrad/REG02.20.14.php Instructors and students must follow these policies. An "Expectation Sheet" which provides students with the format of the final exam will be available the last week of classes. The Expectation Sheet can be found at http://sasw.chass.ncsu.edu/fl/final/. Hard copies of this document will not be distributed. All online students are expected to take the exam on campus during the scheduled time period. See below, if this is not possible, and you have a university approved reason to take the exam with a proctor.
Online Tutorials and Helpful Websites
In general, I do not accept late work since online learning is more flexible for the learner. You must complete each assignment as indicated on the course schedule. The assignments are designed to move you at a consistent, yet reasonable pace, and assignments will not be accepted after the deadline. Plan ahead for problems, do not wait until the last minute to complete assignments and homework, assume that you will have technical problems from time to time, and assume that everything will not go as planned.
There will be a series of specific activities from the Hojas suplementarias that you will complete with your course mate; you are to record these via VISTA, as indicated/assigned on the course schedule. Go to VISTA Discussion Board at beginning of semester and find a course mate with common working times. Email instructor once you have selected a partner.
Your textbook package includes a Quia trifold, where you will find your Quia Book Key in this trifold. This gives you online access to both the Lab Manual (listening comprehension) exercises (LM) and the written Workbook (written) exercises (WB) through Quia (http://books.quia.com/books/ Class code: XEEG487) to be completed as indicated for each chapter. Please follow the directions in the Quia Book Key Tri fold included in the text package in order to create an account, "buy" the workbookd/lab manual using the Quia book key found in the Quia Tri Fold, and then enter your course code. The exercises can be completed in the Foreign Language Technology Center or the HA302 Language Lab, or on any Internet-enabled computer. They are to be completed according to the syllabus. Your grade for QUIA LAB activities will be based on it being completed ACCORDING to the schedule, TIME SPENT in completing the exercises (suggest 1 hour per chapter), and earning at least a 50% total per chapter, after resubmissions. If you are having trouble finding the Lab Manual and/or the Workbook exercises see the Quia Help Page.

The Final Exam will be the comprehensive FLS201 departmental final exam, administered on the date/time indicated on the course schedule for common final exams. We will do the Audio part of the exam at 4:30 p.m., there will be a break from approximately 5:30-6:00, then we will write the written exam from 6-9 p.m. For the Business Spanish course, we will have the same exam as the regular Plazas 201 students except that our exam will focus on business topics and vocabulary.
While I strongly recommend that you take the final exam with the instructor on Tuesday, December 9th, 2008, from 5-9 p.m., if you live more than 30 minutes from the NC State campus, and find it impossible to attend the common final, then you may choose to have your final exam proctored. Proctoring requirements are as follows:
If you live in the Raleigh area (less than 30 minutes away from the NC State campus) and you are not able to take the Common Final Exam on the evening of December 9th, you may first try to arrange to take the exam the following day with the instructor, Louise Dolan, during her make-up exam schedule, December 10th. You may also take the test at a different time on the day of the common final exam (Dec. 9th, 2008) using the proctor services available through Distance Education. John Pugh is the Proctoring Coordinator for DELTA, and will be administering your exams. All students taking their exams through the Distance Education center will be using an online system to schedule their proctoring session. The local proctoring link for the DELTA Testing Center is http://distance.ncsu.edu/students/localproctor.html. To schedule your exam, follow the link on the page entitled “Click here to schedule your appointment online.” You will be prompted to create a login name and password, and then you can use the system to schedule, reschedule, or cancel your final exam from home. You will need to schedule your exam at least a week in advance. You are also encouraged to schedule final exam as early on as possible. If you have any questions with the system, feel free to email John Pugh at deproctor@ncsu.edu.
Note: You must also have a set of headphones in order to take the oral portion of the test.
General
We will practice and develop all five language skills: speaking, listening, writing, reading and culture. Due to the nature of the course, you will be expected to complete a significant amount of work on your own and with your course mate
You and the instructor will follow both the spirit and letter of the NCSU Code of Student Conduct. You will have the opportunity to attest to this in writing upon several occasions. Although you must complete and turn in your own work, you are encouraged to work with others in completing and preparing the course assignments (quizzes and tests being the principal exceptions). However, the copying or sharing of answers, from another student or from an answer key, etc., is not WORKING together and is in violation of the honor code.
“I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this test or assignment.” It is the understanding and expectation of faculty that the student's signature on any test or assignment means that the student neither gave nor received unauthorized aid.
Students with diagnosed disabilities schedule an appointment with the professor at the beginning of the semester to discuss academic accommodations. This student/professor meeting occurs after the professor receives official documentation from the DSS office. Students without official documentation need to register in Suite 1900, Student Health Center. (See current NC State Policy, DSO site, or call 5-7653, voice; 5-8830,TTY.). Students with particular learning styles/needs should inform the instructor at the beginning of the course.
Typically adverse weather will not affect this distance course. Read the complete adverse weather policy for more info. Check email, news, the NCSU home page, or call 513-8888 for the latest information.
Students who feel a need for a tutor may contact the Undergraduate Tutorial Center, 1005K Ricks Hall Annex. This service is available, at no additional cost, to all full-time students of NCSU.
All distance education students have full library privileges. A reference librarian is available by phone, email, and chat to help you with searches; a vast array of electronic resources is available from off-campus through the library's web site; and free document and book delivery is extended to distance education students. Visit the libraries distance web page for more information.
